Transition Year is an optional one-year programme that can be taken following the Junior Certificate.

The programme aims to promote the personal, social and educational  development of pupils and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society.

It is a year in which students have the opportunity to:
  • Try out all Senior Cycle subjects
  • Develop key skills they will need in the transition from Junior to Senior Cycle
  • To sample possible careers through work experience
  • To grow personally through involvement in a wide range of experiences and extra-curricular activities

Subject Sampling

As well as studying core subjects, students complete 10 week sampling modules in the following Senior Cycle subjects.

  • Home Economics
  • Art
  • Design and Communications Graphics
  • Accounting
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology 
  • Engineering
  • Construction Studies
TY Modules

Transition Year students will complete a range of modules such as:

  • Work Experience
  • ICT - Dream Space
  • Minicompany
  • Junk Kouture
  • Gardening
  • First Aid
  • Manual Handling 
  • Food Safety
  • Road Safety
TY Trips

Transition Year students attend trips throughout the year such as:

  • West Cork Secret
  • Ice Skating
  • Film-Making workshop premier  
  • Ballyhass 
  • Comedy Show
  • Cooperating Ireland - Civic Link trips
  • SEPI Dublin & Belfast Trip
  • College Open days: MTU, PLC colleges
  • International school tour - open to all year groups
